While many campaigns and struggles mark the women's movement in India, and the few that we have been able to show here only touch the tip of the iceberg, it is also true that there have been many moments in campaigns, where women activists have expressed a sense of power, of the desire to reach for the sky, of celebration, of possibility. It is these images that show how hope is kept alive in a situation that can often seem daunting, that can often create despair. While the women's movement in India is large, dynamic, complex and while the challenges it is confronted with are enormous, there is little doubt that the movement is also powerful, that the women within it are strong, often articulate, progressive and willing to go not just one, but many extra miles. Over the years groups have produced a number of images that mark this sense of the possible, a sense of empowerment, and it is these images that sustain activists in their dark moments. Every movement records its achievements and failures. The women's movement, more than most, is one that is able to make links across class, caste, religion, region, and is able to work with other movements and to build alliances with them. It is also one of the few – indeed perhaps the only – movement that has been able to reflect on itself, to question its strategies, to learn from its mistakes, and to always remember that there are no ready answers. It's a movement that is justified then in celebrating its achievements and its possibilities and promises. [Top] |
