Poster Women

A Zubaan project

This has been an attempt to visually map the women's movement in India and its concerns and to ask what the history of the movement would look like through its posters and the visual images it had used. For this purpose around 1500 posters were collected from all over the country and exhibited in 17 locations in India and abroad.
The project, which is now in its second phase, aims to digitize and archive the posters collected to make them more widely accessible.
This phase is also working towards putting together a collection of works produced by women artists which uses traditional style to communicate modern messages about issues such as dowry, HIV/AIDS, child marriage, the devastation by the Tsunami, globalisation and so on. We feel that this material provides a different, an alternative narrative, not necessarily of the women’s movement, but of the kinds of things women are thinking about, and of the reach and power of feminist/women’s messages. For more information about the first phase of the project, see Poster Women
